Exploring inside Hálsanefshellir Cave

Be very cautious about entering Hálsanefshellir Cave, as Reynisfjara Beach is known for sneaker waves that can flood the cave, since it’s located close to the water line. Plus, there’s always the danger of rockfall inside the cave.

If you do venture inside (at low tide and in good weather, of course), the dimly-lit interior offers a surreal atmosphere, with the sun’s rays filtering through holes and cracks on bright days. The lava rock walls glisten with moisture, and you will see some basalt rock formations inside as well.

You can also hear the reverberating sound of the waves against the walls of the cave.

Bring a flashlight if you want to examine the textures and forms of the rock on the inside of the cave walls.

Visiting Hálsanefshellir Cave is a very cool experience. Just be cognizant of the dangers and visit only when it is safe.
